    Description

This is a Japanese antique mid sized
    Ishyo-dansu
    or clothing chest
, this tansu was made of paulownia
    kiri
wood face with cryptomeria case and interiors and used over 130 years ago in the mid Meiji Era (c. 1890). The
    ishyodansu
was a special chest used to store kimono and other clothing items. the drawer size and configuration makes these particularly useful in the modern home as a dresser or for other storage.  All locks have been made neutral to negate the use of key or inadvertent locking. The lock plates were very skillfully adorned with a sakura (cherry blossom) design (see picture 5).
This tansu chest is made of solid
    sugi
(cryptomeria) wood with kiri face and has pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint construction (see picture 8).  All the hardware is hand forged iron.
This tansu chest has a total of three drawers of equal size (each 8" high).  All drawers move easily without binding.
This chest has a century plus old original
    warm aged patina
and, having been used lovingly over the centuries, it remains in
    fine original antique condition
and should serve one well for another century of use.   It measures 22.5" wide by 22" high by 12.5" deep (57 x 56 x 32 cm).  A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
    very solid and functional
    piece of furniture.
