Description
This is an antique Japanesekiseru
from the mid Meiji
Era (c. 1890s)
.
Both bowl and mouthpiece look to be made of silver or silver plate with an age darkened bamboo center. This type of slim kiseru pipe was probably used in its day by a geisha (see last picture). It is quite elegant and compact and still has a nice draw. This kiseru has a signature,
Murata
(see picture 7) and an etched design of plum blossom (see picture 8).
This 100 plus year old antique
kiseru
measures 8" (20.5 cm).
It has been well used, yet well loved and, along with its warm aged patin
a, this kiseru remains in
very
good
(functional) condition
. The last picture shows a wood block print from the early 1800's of a geisha holding a kiseru similar to this one.
You'll love it, I guarantee it.
