If you plan on building an iPod and will use the stock Apple firmware:
The song limits below are only approximate. The actual limits depend on your iTunes library and the amount of meta-data stored within the tracks (e.g. artist name, track name, genre, comments, album art, ect.)
For 32MB logic board there’s an iTunes database limit of 10,000-20,000 songs. In this case for an Apple lossless (ALAC) library, I recommend not making your iPod build storage any larger than 400GB-450GB. For MP3/AAC library, I recommend not making your iPod build storage any larger than 128GB-160GB.
For 64MB logic board there’s an iTunes database limit of 40,000-50,000 songs. In this case for an Apple lossless (ALAC) library I recommend a storage size of 1TB or higher. For MP3/AAC library I recommend 1TB or slightly lower.
If you plan on building an iPod with the intent of ditching the stock Apple firmware for the open-sourced Rockbox firmware, your choice of 32MB/64MB really only depends on the price/performance ratio you’re looking for.
According to the Rockbox forums, there is “no track limit” outside of 10,000 files per folder. That means you can get away with using a 32MB logic board but keep in mind, updating your library into the Rockbox database can take some time if you have a 500GB+ sized library. Other than that, playback works well with SD/microSD based storage (which by itself is a significant improvement over the stock HDD access time) and gives you access to the fresh sound of a modified Wolfson DAC at a great price! I’ve personally tested 32MB logic board built iPods with large FLAC libraries over 1TB with good results.
However, if you’re seeking the absolute optimal experience, I highly recommend going with a 64MB logic board. It sports an improved drive access time performance over the 32MB logic board. This is especially noticed with larger drives, noteworthy improvements in large playlist playback, database initialization time improvements. Definitely for the audio enthusiast who wants arguably the best experience with a portable audio player anywhere.
    diyMod DAC Modification
The diyMod is an upgrade one used to see back during the height of the 5
    th
generation iPod’s popularity. Audio specialist companies such as Red Wine would charge a very large amount for a direct wiring of the DAC. I’m able to offer the same type of service with considerable savings.
I modify my logic boards with a direct line from the DAC to the dock connector. This process involves the removal of unnecessary surface mounted capacitors and other circuitry that inhibits the DAC from producing a sound to its full potential. I add high quality electrolytic capacitors. This results in the iPod producing the best sound the iPod or any other Digital Audio Player has been able to produce.
This diyMod Install Service has the following capacitor options:
(As pictured from left to right)
    1) 10V 47uF Nichicon Muse
    2) 10V 47uF ELNA Silmic II
    3) 16V 47uF ELNA Silmic II (Thick iPod backplate required)
Let me know your choice via "Message to seller" option at checkout
So what difference will you hear with a diyMod?
Improvement in resolution of fine detail
Improvement in bass control and definition
Improvement in midrange, rich and more seductive
    Improvement in treble extension
    Increased more 3D soundstage
    Better sound separation
Most audio enthusiasts agree that the diyMod iPod provides the best sound out there by any portable audio player device.
Should be used with an amplifier to achieve optimal sound. The mod doesn’t affect sound from the headphone jack. It will work as it normally would.
I perform the mod install and ship your item back to you within 1-2 business days after receiving your shipment from the Post Office.
