I own an advertising specialty company - now in our 42nd year I am happy to report - and worked in the industry for many years prior to establishing my own firm. Over the years we produced many unusual advertising items and collected a wide array of specialty samples. We are now in semi-retirement and offering much of that collection on eBay.A company called World Wide Art Studios, located in Tennessee, was and still is one of our better suppliers of fine porcelain decorated gifts. They are craftsmen in kiln fired pieces.
While searching through an old sample box from the 1980's I happened upon this beautiful porcelain night caddy sample featuring the multi-color Exxon design. I assume that the intricate design was related to the theme "Put A Tiger In Your Tank". It appears to be an award related to an Exxon safety program.
The design is in multi four colors plus genuine 23k gold embellishment. As such, it should not be microwaved - but of course who microwaves a night caddy? Rather than being screened, the design is actually decaled. Decaling has several advantages over direct screening. First, much more detail is achievable. These fine lines would not be reproducible if screened. Also durability is a factor. The decal is applied and then kiln fired at very high temperatures for a period of time so that the design is actually fused into the porcelain. In short, it will never come off!
This nice caddy is 5.5" x 6". As indicated by the also fired information on the bottom, it is in Fine Porcelain, manufactured by World Wide and is marked as a sample, along with World Wide's industry assigned I.D. number. I have no idea of how many were made. What occurred is that World Wide ran the mug for a distributor who sold it to Exxon. World Wide liked the design so much that they in turn ran a very limited number marked as sample for select distributors. As we sold quite a lot of their line, World Wide sent the sample to us to spark sales ideas. Consequently, while there may still be a few from the order, to find one marked "sample" is rare.
This sample is approaching 40 years old, but in as new condition! No flaws or blemishes, and of course was never used. It will be expertly packaged to guarantee safe arrival.
An excellent gift for anyone associated with Exxon or a collector of such memorabilia. A very rare find for sure.
