These 3 items are genuine AquaClear/Fluval and form a maintenance kit.  This set is for the 70/300 sized hang on back filter. The biomax has a box, the carbon is in a sealed bag and the sponge is from a box that was opened.  So they are all new, flawless and what you see it, is what you get. :)
1. The biomax is upgraded with better biologicals (thus the slight multi-color change that you can see if you look closer).  Replace every 3 months and only rinse with AQUARIUM water in a bucket when cleaning, so the good bacteria stays in tact and keeps your fish protected!
2. The carbon is 100% carbon with no fillers and is sealed.  Replace monthly and rinse before first use and rinse with aquarium water in between needed replacements.  May need to replaced more often with heavier loaded tanks.
3.  The sponge is important in trapping particles so the biomax does not become loaded down with debris and shorten it's life.  This sponge is new as well, just no packing. Replace with new sponge every 2 months and rinse in aquarium water when cleaning in between replacements
