    Tokugawa Shogun Families
Tokugawa Shogun Family is a family line which topped the whole of the Japanese society including the samurai world practically as the monarch and ruler of Japan over a period of 264 years during the Edo period (from 1603 to 1867). Thay monopolized the positions of military officers like Konoe no daisho (major captain of the palace guards) and Seii taishogun (generalissimo for the subjugation of barbarians) and exercised a power over feudal lords of Chujo (lieutenant general) or Shosho (minor captain). Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first head of the family, handed over the shogunate to his third son Hidetada, and Hidetada handed his position over to his second son Iemitsu (his first son Nagamaru died young). Since then, the principle that the shogunate should be inherited by the eldest son of the Tokugawa family was established. In order to consolidate the principle, successive leaders strived to retain the lineage by having many concubines in their O-oku, or inner
alaces.Nevertheless, the head family members did not always have the true heirs and often had to adopt children from close relatives or Gosanke (three privileged branches of the Tokugawa family). Among the 15 Tokugawa shoguns, there were only 3 of them, namely, Ieyasu, Iemitsu and Yoshinobu who were born from lawful wives.
Used by only high rank the busho or daimyo.
