    Port Royal, Jamaica was known as the "most wicked & sinful city in the world" when it was leveled by an enormous earthquake on June 7, 1692.  Much of the city slid into the sea or was washed away by tidal waves; over 3000 people perished.  Damage was so extensive that no attempt was made to rebuild; the site was abandoned.
