Description
This stunning 2" challenge coin honors the USS Indianapolis.The front of this coin features 2 tone metal finishes, with the USS Indianapolis depicted with a 3d shiny nickel finish. The sea has a translucent teal color fill, highlighting the 3d waves, with a black sky, giving a striking contrast and feel to the coin.
The top of the coin states the ship's name USS Indianapolis, while the bottom says the date it was first awarded: August 15th 1929 to the tragic day it was sunk: July 30th 1945. The outside of the coin is highlighted with a shiny gold rope edge design.
The rear of this coin depicts the final fate of the USS Indianapolis:
"30 July, The ship was torpedoed by the Imperial Japanese navy submarine 1-58, and sank in 12 minutes.
Of 1195 Crewman aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remaining 890 faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks while stranded in the open ocean with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. Only 310 survived.
The sinking of the Indianapolis resulted in the greatest single loss of life at sea, from a single ship, in the history of the US Navy"
