Description
This is a vintage Japanesehibachi
brazier made of an aluminum alloy. This hibachi wa
s used over 70 ago as a space heater.
It has a carved and silver and gold fusion design of a mt. Fuji scenic.
This hibachi
would have been half filled with ash and charcoal placed in the center
. It has fierce foo dog (shishi) handles on both sides (see picture 6) used to move it even when warm with charcoal. The shishi or foo dog was a mythical animal half dog and half lion with the spunk of both. It was the guardian of the spirit world and protected mankind.
It has a zelkova wood base to protect the tatami floors on which it was once used (see pictures 10 & 11).
It
measures 17" wide not including handles by 10 1/4" tall (43 x 26 cm)
. Having been used lovingly, with exception of a an aged patina and some minor scratches scratches as well as minor signs of past use, this brazier remains in
very good condition
