Description

This is Dorothy and her Auntie traveling in Taipei in the 1950s.
The woman on the right, "Dorothy," and her Aunties traveled to many exotic locales back in the 50s and 60s. I believe that is Dorothy's other Auntie seen there on the left in this portrait, with her own camera.
Dorothy was a direct descendant of Captain Charles Low, from the 19th century. Traveling was in the blood. After Dorothy's Aunties passed away, Dorothy continued to travel on her own: riding a camel in Egypt, traveling the outback of Australia, visiting the Polar bears of Point Barrow, Alaska and even making a trip to Antarctica. Quite the globetrotter.
For a time Dorothy taught English for the University of the Seven Seas and World Campus Afloat, now known as "Semester at Sea."  She must have visited countless ports, as she was with the Campus Afloat for two years in the 1960s.
I love how we see the women here, in their "sensible" shoes, and at a time when not many Americans were visiting Taipei.
The plate measures 6" in diameter.

For those of you who enjoy a good story, with this plate I am including an advertisement for Atlantic Mutual, an ad printed in Time Magazine, 1967.  The insurance ad features a terrific story about Dorothy's great-grandfather Captain Low. Unfortunately, I was only able to photograph the ad and so you see in the photos shown in three parts. I hope you enjoy this tale of adventure.
